BJP wins its first majority
What happened
A party won its first outright majority in Gujarat this time.
It won 121 of the 182 seats on offer — a landslide by any measure.
That was a vote share of 42.5% — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate.
The Indian National Congress trailed well behind, with 45 seats.
What changed
The party that had led the previous government fell sharply this time.
35 seats moved directly from the Janata Dal to the Bharatiya Janata Party — the largest shift between any two parties that year.
The JD itself collapsed.
The BJP itself grew from 67 seats to 121 in one election.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from the results stand out.
The tightest finish was Radhanpur, Gujarat, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 307 votes.
Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — reached 62.2% across the state, the highest yet in its own history to that point.
Within that, Deodar, Gujarat saw the highest turnout of any single seat, at 82.9%.
Chorasi, Gujarat had the largest electorate of any seat that year, with 7,01,573 people on the rolls.
