A narrower win for Congress
What happened
Indian National Congress won again, though its majority narrowed.
The INC won 93 of the 168 seats on offer.
That was still 8 seats more than it needed for a majority.
Its nearest rival, the Swatantra Party, rose to 66 seats, gaining +13.7 pp in vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate.
What changed
The assembly grew again this time, adding new seats to the map.
It rose from 154 seats to 168.
Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — also reached its highest point so far in the state's history.
59.7% of the state's registered voters cast a ballot this time.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
The closest race: Jasdan, Gujarat was decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 67 votes.
At the other extreme, Pardi, Gujarat saw the widest margin of the night, with the winner ahead by 74.9% of the vote.
Turnout was highest in Daskroi, Gujarat, where 78.4% of registered voters cast a ballot.
The most crowded contest was in Alia, Gujarat, where 7 candidates stood.
