The party that had won Gujarat's last election returned to power, retaining a comfortable majority even as its seat count eased back slightly from before.

The Bharatiya Janata Party won 117 of the 182 seats on offer, a landslide result.

That was 25 seats more than it needed for a majority.

Its nearest rival, the Indian National Congress, followed with 53 seats.

The party kept its majority, though a portion of the seats it had won last time slipped to its main rival.

Its seat count eased from 121 to 117.

24 constituencies that had backed the BJP swung to the INC instead, out of 68 that changed hands.

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The closest race: Upleta, Gujarat was decided by just 379 votes — the narrowest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, anywhere in the state that year.

At the other extreme, Ellis Bridge, Gujarat was won by a margin of 59.4% of the vote.

Vav, Gujarat recorded the highest turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — of any seat that year, at 75.6%.

Jamnagar Rural, Gujarat recorded the lowest, at 36.8%.

This was the same party's second straight win in Gujarat's assembly.
