The new state's Indian National Congress won a landslide in its very first assembly election.

The INC won 113 of the 154 seats on offer.

That was 35 seats more than it needed for a majority.

Its nearest rival, the Swatantra Party, won 26 seats and 24.4% of the vote.

This was the very first assembly election held after the state's creation.

519 candidates contested the 154 constituencies that made up the new assembly.

5 parties ended up winning seats, and 7 more went to independent candidates.

About 54.6% of registered voters turned out to cast a ballot across the new state.

A few numbers from that founding contest stand out.

The closest race: Matar, Gujarat was decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 33 votes.

At the other extreme, Devgadh Baria, Gujarat saw the widest margin of the night, with the winner ahead by 76.8% of the vote.

Turnout was highest in Ankleshwar, Gujarat, where 82.7% of registered voters cast a ballot.

The largest electorate was in Umreth, Gujarat, where 81,506 people were registered to vote.

This election followed the creation of the new state itself.

Gujarat elected its first assembly under this new arrangement.
