Bharatiya Janata Party won again, with a solid seat majority, while the main opposition trailed well behind.

The BJP won 115 of the 182 seats on offer, a landslide result.

That left it 23 seats clear of the majority mark.

Its nearest rival, the Indian National Congress, trailed with 61 seats.

This was also the first election held on Gujarat's redrawn constituency map.

The boundaries had just gone through delimitation — the official redrawing of constituency boundaries, as India's population shifts over time.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — reached 72.0%, the highest ever recorded in the state.

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The closest race: Sojitra, Gujarat was decided by just 162 votes — the narrowest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, anywhere in the state that year.

At the other extreme, Maninagar, Gujarat was won by a margin of 54.1% of the vote.

Dediapada, Gujarat posted the highest turnout of any seat, at 89.2%.

Limbayat, Gujarat drew the most crowded ballot in the state, with 20 candidates standing.

A new challenger also entered the assembly that year.

GPP won its first seats in the state.
