Bharatiya Janata Party won again, but with a much smaller cushion than before.

The BJP won 99 of the 182 seats on offer, enough to keep governing.

That was just 7 seats more than it needed for a majority.

Its main rival, the Indian National Congress, closed in with 77 seats of its own.

The party held on, but a slice of its seats slipped away to its rival this time.

The BJP has now won 6 elections in the state in a row.

33 constituencies that had backed the BJP swung to the INC instead, out of 58 statewide.

BTP also won seats in the state for the first time.

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The closest race: Kaprada, Gujarat was decided by just 170 votes — the narrowest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, anywhere in the state that year.

At the other extreme, Majura, Gujarat was won by a margin of 56.4% of the vote.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — ranged from a high of 86.1% in Tharad, Gujarat to a low of 54.2% in Garbada, Gujarat.

Statewide, 5,51,615 ballots went to NOTA — "None of the Above," a ballot option letting voters formally reject every candidate on offer — 1.8% of the vote.

This election kept the state under BJP, though its margin narrowed.
