Congress edges back into power
What happened
The opposition returned to power, but without a majority of its own.
Indian National Congress won 100 of the 200 seats on offer, leaving a hung house — a result where no single party wins enough seats to govern alone.
The outgoing Bharatiya Janata Party collapsed from its previous majority to just 73 seats.
What changed
A large share of seats changed hands from the outgoing party to the incoming one.
75 seats swung from BJP to INC, the single largest movement of the election.
Overall, 117 of the 200 seats compared changed which party held them.
Vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — moved too: +6.2 pp for the incoming party, -6.4 pp for the outgoing one.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from this election are worth knowing on their own.
Kishanpole, Rajasthan drew the largest field of candidates in the state, 46 names on the ballot.
The closest race: Asind, Rajasthan was decided by a margin of just 154 votes — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second.
Statewide, 1.3% of voters chose NOTA — "None of the Above" — a ballot option letting voters formally reject every candidate on offer.
Pokaran, Rajasthan recorded the highest turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — of any seat, at 88.3%.
The backdrop
This ended the outgoing party's time in office, even though the incoming party fell short of a majority too.
After leading the Bharatiya Janata Party to victory in the December 2003 Rajasthan assembly election, Vasundhara Raje was sworn in as Chief Minister on 8 December 2003, becoming the first woman to hold the office in the state's history. She served until December 2008 and returned as Chief Minister after the 2013 election.
