The BJP returns, with a new Chief Minister
What happened
The incumbent government was swept out of office, and the opposition returned to power.
Bharatiya Janata Party won 120 of the 200 seats on offer, a landslide result.
It also won 39.2% of the vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate.
The outgoing Indian National Congress collapsed to just 56 seats.
What changed
A large share of seats changed hands from the outgoing party to the incoming one.
99 seats swung from INC to BJP, the largest single movement of the election.
Overall, 141 of the 200 seats compared changed which party held them.
The winning party's vote share rose by +6.0 pp from the previous election, while the outgoing party's fell by -9.3 pp.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from this election are worth knowing on their own.
The closest race: Karauli, Rajasthan was decided by a margin of just 155 votes — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second.
At the other extreme, Toda Bhim, Rajasthan saw the widest margin of the election, at 39.7% of the vote.
About 67.1% of registered voters turned out to cast a ballot, the highest share Rajasthan had recorded in an assembly election up to that point.
Bani Park, Rajasthan had the largest electorate of any seat, with 4,34,501 registered voters.
The backdrop
This was a complete change of government in the state.
After leading the Bharatiya Janata Party to victory in the December 2003 Rajasthan assembly election, Vasundhara Raje was sworn in as Chief Minister on 8 December 2003, becoming the first woman to hold the office in the state's history. She served until December 2008 and returned as Chief Minister after the 2013 election.
