Congress storms back
What happened
Congress returned to power in a landslide in this election.
The Indian National Congress won 52 of the 68 seats on offer.
That was 17 seats more than it needed for a majority.
The outgoing Bharatiya Janata Party fell to just 8 seats, even though it still held 36.1% of the vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate.
What changed
Turnout climbed to a new high for the state in this election.
About 70.9% of registered voters turned out to cast a ballot, the highest share recorded in the state yet.
Most of the swing came from BJP voters moving to INC, 33 seats' worth.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from the results stand out on their own.
Simla, Himachal Pradesh saw the tightest fight of the night, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 159 votes.
At the other end, Rohru, Himachal Pradesh was the widest win of the night, with a margin of 57.0% of the vote.
Theog, Himachal Pradesh posted the highest turnout of the election, at 81.9%.
Kulu, Himachal Pradesh was the largest constituency by registered voters, with 70,806 on its rolls.
