What happened
The state's very first assembly election ended in a landslide.
The Indian National Congress won 24 of the seats on offer.
That was comfortably clear of the 19-seat majority mark in the 36-seat house.
The Independent camp followed with 8 seats.
What changed
This was the very first Vidhan Sabha election held in the state.
Some of that year's constituencies used a multi-member design, where a single contest sent more than one member to the assembly.
8 of the 28 constituencies worked this way.
Altogether the new assembly held 36 seats.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that first election stand out.
The closest race: Bhamla, Himachal Pradesh was decided by just 67 votes — the narrowest margin, how far ahead the winner finished over whoever came second, of any seat that year.
At the other end, Mahadev, Himachal Pradesh was the most one-sided contest, with the winner finishing 79.2% clear of the runner-up.
Theog, Himachal Pradesh drew the most crowded ballot, with 12 candidates standing.
About 26.7% of registered voters turned out to cast a ballot in the state's first election.
