BJP's first government
What happened
The BJP won power in the state for the first time in this election.
It took 45 of the 67 seats on offer.
That was 11 seats more than it needed for a majority.
The outgoing Indian National Congress was not even the runner-up this time — that distinction went to Janata Dal, with 11 seats in its first outing.
It was a clear landslide victory.
What changed
The outgoing party's own support collapsed, and most of it moved straight to the BJP.
Most of those seats — 38 of them — flipped directly from INC to Bharatiya Janata Party.
A brand new party, JD, also entered the assembly, taking 11 seats in its first appearance.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from the results stand out on their own.
Gopalpur, Himachal Pradesh saw the tightest fight of the night, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 440 votes.
At the other end, Rohru, Himachal Pradesh was the widest win of the night, with a margin of 79.5% of the vote.
Paonta Doon, Himachal Pradesh recorded the highest turnout of the election, 79.6% — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot.
Una, Himachal Pradesh was the largest constituency by registered voters, with 62,665 on its rolls.
The backdrop
This was the BJP's first taste of governing the state on its own.
