The independent-aligned bloc that had swept the previous election collapsed, and the party it replaced returned instead.

The Indian National Congress won 66 seats.

That was a narrow majority — just 2 seats more than the 64 needed to govern.

The seats that had swung to independents the last time out mostly swung back the other way.

Independent lost the most ground of any party.

48 of its seats flipped to INC.

Turnout, the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot, also eased — a change of -4.8 pp from the previous election.

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The closest race: Naharkatia, Assam was decided by just 56 votes — the margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second.

At Sidli, Assam, the margin stretched to 65.4% of the vote, the widest of the election.

This was also the first election in which AGP, BJP, NAGP, and ADC won seats under those names.

The party that finished second in this election would go on to win power again in later years.

The Asom Gana Parishad finished second, winning 19 seats.
