Congress holds on, with fewer seats
What happened
Congress held onto power for a second term, with fewer seats than before.
The Indian National Congress won 71 of the 108 seats on offer.
That was still 16 seats more than it needed for a majority.
Its vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — still climbed, up +8.9 pp.
What changed
A new political party also broke into Assam's state assembly this election, winning seats there for the very first time.
PSP entered the house for the first time.
The overall contest drew 307 candidates across 94 constituencies.
That worked out to about 3.3 candidates per seat, on average.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
Aijal East, Assam saw the tightest finish of the election, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 157 votes.
At the other extreme, Doom Dooma, Assam was the most lopsided contest, won by a margin of 78.4%.
Rampur, Assam posted the best turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — of the election, at 66.9%.
The largest electorate anywhere was in Patharkandi, Assam, with 97,039 registered voters.
The backdrop
Fewer voters turned out across Assam this time than at the previous election.
Turnout changed by -2.7 pp, to 47.8%.
