A landslide, and a run continues
What happened
Indian National Congress won a landslide victory, extending its own run in office by another term.
The INC won 78 of the 126 seats.
That was a majority of 14 seats to spare.
It had now won 3 elections in a row in the state.
The runner-up, All India United Democratic Front, won 18 seats.
What changed
INC grew even stronger than at its last win, adding a large block of seats to an already wide lead.
The INC went from 53 seats to 78.
Its vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — rose by +8.3 pp from the previous election.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
The tightest finish was in Batadroba, Assam, decided by a margin of just 131 votes — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second.
The widest winning margin came in Titabar, Assam, where the winner finished 61.4% of the vote ahead of the runner-up.
Statewide turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — reached 76.0%, the highest Assam had recorded up to that point.
The most crowded ballot was in Karimganj South, Assam, where 25 candidates stood for one seat.
The backdrop
Compared to the previous election, the field of parties winning seats narrowed sharply, and independents all but disappeared from the result.
