The story

A landslide return to power

What happened

The governing regional party lost power in a landslide defeat.

The Indian National Congress won 71 of the 126 seats.

That left a majority of 7 seats to spare.

The Asom Gana Parishad, the party it had just unseated, won only 20 seats.

What changed

The regional party that had governed lost more than half the seats it held, while the opposition rebuilt from a small tally of its own.

The INC went from 36 seats to 71.

Its vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — rose by +9.0 pp.

Notable numbers

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The tightest finish was in Silchar, Assam, decided by a margin of just 71 votes — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second.

The widest winning margin came in Kokrajhar East, Assam, where the winner finished 68.9% of the vote ahead of the runner-up.

Gossaigaon, Assam recorded the highest turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — of any seat that year, at 89.5%.

The most crowded ballot was in Hailakandi, Assam, where 18 candidates stood for one seat.

The backdrop

The regional party it defeated would go on to contest many more elections in Assam in the years that followed.
