Indian National Congress kept its hold on the state assembly, winning another term with no real contest for power.

The INC won 219 of the 287 seats on offer.

Its closest competition came from Independent candidates, who won 57 seats between them.

This election extended a long unbroken streak for INC, without a single loss across several earlier elections.

It was the party's 5th win in a row in the state, its best seat count there yet.

17 of that year's seats were unopposed returns — seats where only one candidate stood, so no vote was needed to decide them.

A few numbers from that election are worth knowing on their own.

The tightest race was Podili, Andhra Pradesh, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 125 votes.

At the other extreme, Manthani, Andhra Pradesh was the most one-sided contest of the year, won by 83.7% of the vote.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — peaked in Vuyyur, Andhra Pradesh, where 82.1% of voters turned out.

Even the busiest ballot that year was modest: Tungaturthi, Andhra Pradesh drew the most candidates of any seat, just 9 in all.

This election took place within a still relatively young state, formed by joining Telugu-speaking regions together under one assembly.
