YSR Congress Party's landslide debut in government

What happened

Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party, led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, defeated the sitting Telugu Desam Party government in a landslide in Andhra Pradesh.1

It won 151 of the 175 seats.

That left it 63 seats clear of a majority.

The TDP was reduced to 23 seats, even though it kept 39.2% of the vote.

YSRCP itself took 86.3% of the seats from 50.0% of the vote.

The campaign

YSRCP leader Jagan Mohan Reddy, then leader of the opposition, walked a 3,648-km padayatra called the Praja Sankalpa Yatra from 6 November 2017 to 9 January 2019, covering more than 130 of the state's 175 assembly constituencies.1

In March 2018, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party withdrew its ministers from the central government and quit the National Democratic Alliance, citing the Centre's refusal to grant Andhra Pradesh special category status. Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena Party announced on 2 May 2018 that it would contest all 175 seats.23

On 25 October 2018, Jagan was attacked with a cock-fighting knife by an assailant in the VIP lounge of Visakhapatnam Airport while boarding a flight, during the run-up to the campaign.4

The Election Commission set nomination for 18 March 2019, polling for 11 April 2019, and counting for 23 May 2019, alongside the Lok Sabha election. Pawan Kalyan contested both Gajuwaka and Bhimavaram himself and lost both seats. On polling day, EVM glitches were reported at nearly 50 places, and Naidu sought VVPAT verification from the Election Commission.567

What changed

TDP's long rule ended in collapse.

Its vote share slipped -5.4 pp, yet its seat count fell to 23.

The single biggest movement ran from TDP to YSRCP, covering 83 of the 92 seats that changed hands.

YSRCP itself grew from 67 seats to 151 seats this time.

Turnout, the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot, rose +0.9 pp to its highest level yet in the state.

Notable numbers

The closest race was Vijayawada Central, Andhra Pradesh, decided by 25 votes — one of the tightest finishes anywhere that year.

Pulivendla, Andhra Pradesh was the most one-sided contest, won by 50.0% of the vote.

Darsi, Andhra Pradesh recorded the highest turnout of any seat, 91.1%.

Gajuwaka, Andhra Pradesh carried the largest electorate of any seat, 3,10,011 registered voters.

Guntur West, Andhra Pradesh drew the most crowded ballot, 34 candidates standing.

NOTA — "None of the Above", a ballot option letting voters formally reject every candidate on offer — drew 1.3% of the vote statewide.

The backdrop

Jagan Mohan Reddy left the Indian National Congress in late 2010 after a leadership dispute and took over the YSR Congress Party, registered on 12 March 2011, as a new political vehicle in Andhra Pradesh.8

The state itself had only recently been redrawn: the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 split it into Telangana and a residuary Andhra Pradesh, taking effect on 2 June 2014.9

The TDP it defeated had itself ended 27 years of unbroken Congress rule when NTR founded it in 1982 and won the 1983 election.10
