Congress won a landslide in the newly formed Andhra State's very first assembly election.

The Indian National Congress took 119 of the 196 seats on offer.

It polled 39.4% of the vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate.

Independent candidates followed, taking 22 seats between them.

This was also the very first election held on Andhra State's own constituency map.

Some of that year's constituencies used a multi-member design, where the same contest chose more than one MLA to represent it in the assembly.

29 of the 167 constituencies worked this way.

A few numbers from that first election stand out.

The closest race was in Adoni, Andhra Pradesh, decided by just 34 votes — the margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second.

At the other extreme, Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh saw the widest margin of the contest, with the winner ahead by 75.9% of the vote.

About 61.1% of registered voters turned out to cast a ballot across the new state.

Gannavaram, Andhra Pradesh recorded the best turnout of the election, at 82.2%.

Andhra State itself had only recently been carved out of Madras State when this vote took place.

This state's own assembly didn't stand alone for long: it was folded into a larger state within about a year, and its elected members kept their seats there.
