The story

The Left returns to power

What happened

The party that had been out of government came back to power in a landslide.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 44 of the 60 seats.

That was 13 more than it needed for a majority.

The Indian National Congress finished a distant second, with 10 seats.

What changed

A large share of the assembly swung back from the party that had governed in between.

Across the state, 16 seats moved from the INC to the CPM, the single biggest shift of the election.

The winning party's own seat count grew from 26 at the previous election to 44 this time.

Notable numbers

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The tightest race was in Mohanpur, Tripura, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 60 votes.

At the other extreme, Asharambari, Tripura was the most lopsided contest, with the winner ahead by 67.2% of the vote.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — was highest in Khowai, Tripura, at 87.6%.

The most crowded ballot was in Agartala, Tripura, where 10 candidates stood.

The backdrop

The state's left-wing bloc returned to power in this election, after a term governed by a rival coalition.

Historical context
Congress-TUJS Alliance Ends First Left Front Government

The 1988 Tripura Legislative Assembly election was held on 2 February amid widespread election-related violence. An Indian National Congress-Tripura Upajati Juba Samiti alliance won 32 of 60 seats (Congress 25, TUJS 7), unseating the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front government in office since 1978. Sudhir Ranjan Majumdar (Congress) became Chief Minister on 5 February 1988.

It returned under the Left Front banner, with 46 seats between it and its allies.
