The Left's first win
What happened
A left-wing coalition swept to power for the first time, ending Congress's hold on the state in a landslide.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 51 of the 60 seats.
The outgoing Indian National Congress suffered a collapse, coming away with only a few seats.
Its nearest rival instead was a new party, the Tripura Upajati Juba Samiti, with 4 seats of its own.
What changed
This was a real change of government, not just a shift between familiar rivals.
The CPM grew from 16 seats at the previous election to 51 this time.
New parties, TUS and RSP, also won seats in the assembly for the first time.
It finished 20 seats clear of the majority mark.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — reached 78.0% across the state, the highest Tripura had recorded up to that point.
The tightest race was in Belonia, Tripura, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 119 votes.
At the other extreme, Ramchandraghat, Tripura was the most lopsided contest, with the winner ahead by 71.7% of the vote.
The most crowded ballot was in Panisagar, Tripura, where 11 candidates stood.
The backdrop
This was the first time power had changed hands in Tripura's election record up to that point.
