The story

A narrower majority, same government

What happened

Tripura's governing left-wing bloc held onto power, though with a smaller share of the assembly than before.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 37 of the 60 seats.

That was still 6 more than it needed for a majority.

The Indian National Congress finished second with 12 seats.

What changed

Even in victory, CPM's own support narrowed considerably from the previous election.

Its seat count fell from 51 at the last election to 37 this time.

Across the state, 9 seats moved from the CPM to the INC, the single biggest shift of the election.

Notable numbers

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The tightest race was in Chhawmanu, Tripura, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 64 votes.

At the other extreme, Ramchandraghat, Tripura was the most lopsided contest, with the winner ahead by 73.8% of the vote.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — reached 81.7% across the state, the highest Tripura had recorded up to that point.

The most crowded ballot was in Town Bordowali, Tripura, where 6 candidates stood.

The backdrop

The state's left-wing bloc held onto office for another term, even with a narrower majority than before.

It had now won 2 elections in a row.
