Uttarakhand held its first-ever assembly election as a new state, and one party narrowly secured a working majority.

The Indian National Congress won 36 of the 70 seats.

That was exactly the 36-seat majority mark.

Its nearest rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party, won 19 seats.

This was the very first assembly election Uttarakhand ever held.

A crowded field of parties and independents contested every seat, with an average of 13.2 candidates competing seat by seat.

In the end, 6 parties picked up at least one seat.

A few numbers from the count stand out on their own.

The closest race: Vikasnagar, Uttarakhand was decided by just 58 votes, the smallest margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of any seat that year.

At the other end, Bironkhal, Uttarakhand was the most one-sided contest, won by a margin of 29.0% of the vote over the runner-up.

The best turnout of the year was in Laksar, Uttarakhand, where about 73.2% of registered voters turned out to cast a ballot.

Doiwala, Uttarakhand carried the largest electorate of any seat, with 1,29,289 registered voters, and was also the most contested, drawing 24 candidates.

Uttarakhand had only recently come into existence as a separate state when this election was held.
