What happened
Uttar Pradesh's ruling party kept its winning streak alive, and this time did so with a majority of its own.
The Indian National Congress won 215 of the 424 seats.
That was enough to clear the 213-seat majority mark.
That was its 6th consecutive win in Uttar Pradesh.
Its nearest rival, Bharatiya Kranti Dal, won 106 seats.
What changed
A large share of the assembly's seats changed hands between the two elections, even though the overall balance of power barely moved.
253 of the 424 seats compared switched party.
The clearest shift ran from BKD to INC, which picked up 49 of those seats.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
The closest race: Robertaganj, Uttar Pradesh was decided by just 21 votes — the narrowest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, of any seat that year.
Thakurdwara, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — of any seat that year, at 75.1%.
At the other extreme, Dixit, Uttar Pradesh recorded the lowest turnout of any seat that year, at just 29.4%.
Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh drew the most candidates of any seat that year, 24 in total.
The backdrop
The rest of the assembly, beyond the top two parties, remained fairly fragmented.
12 parties won at least one seat, and independents added just 5 more.
