A hung assembly
What happened
Uttar Pradesh's ruling party again finished with the most seats, but this time without enough to govern alone.
The Indian National Congress won 199 of the 425 seats.
That left the assembly hung — a result where no single party wins enough seats to govern alone.
Its vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — was 32.2%.
What changed
This election followed a boundary revision that trimmed the size of the assembly.
The assembly now had 425 seats, down from 430 at the previous election.
Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — also moved, by +2.3 pp from the previous election.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
The closest race: Dildarnagar, Uttar Pradesh was decided by just 1 vote — the narrowest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, of any seat that year.
At the other extreme, Chaprauli, Uttar Pradesh was won by the widest margin of any seat, at 75.3% of the vote.
Rampur, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest turnout of any seat that year, at 72.0%.
Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh drew the most candidates of any seat that year, 21 in total.
