Uttar Pradesh's ruling party won again, by a smaller landslide than its first.

The Indian National Congress won 286 seats, its 2nd win in a row.

Its vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — was 42.4%.

The Independent bloc was the largest opposition, with 74 seats.

This election redrew the constituency map for the first time since 1951.

It used 341 constituencies to fill 430 seats.

89 of those constituencies elected two members each, the same design as before.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — also moved, by +7.4 pp since then.

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The closest race: Auraiya, Uttar Pradesh was decided by just 69 votes — the narrowest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, of any seat that year.

Kairana, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest turnout of any seat that year, at 88.1%.

4 seats were unopposed returns — a seat where only one candidate stood, so no vote was needed to decide it.

At the other extreme, Ujhani, Uttar Pradesh was won by the widest margin of any seat, at 61.3% of the vote.

New parties broke into Uttar Pradesh's assembly for the first time at this election.

PSP and CPI each won a seat for the first time.
