Congress sweeps back in
What happened
This election swung decisively behind one party, ending the deadlock of the assembly before it.
The Indian National Congress won 21 of the 30 seats on offer, a landslide by any measure.
That gave it 5 seats more than the 16-seat mark needed for a majority.
The next-largest bloc was Independent candidates, who won 4 seats between them.
What changed
The tied, closely divided assembly from the previous election gave way to a single, dominant winner this time.
The previous election's leading party, the Indian National Congress (I), collapsed.
The INC itself was contesting for the first time under that name.
It went from 0 seats to 21 in a single election.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from the results stand out.
The tightest race was in Daporijo, Arunachal Pradesh, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 22 votes.
At the other end, Yingkiong-Pangin, Arunachal Pradesh saw the widest margin of the night, with the winner ahead by 32.4% of the vote.
Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — reached 70.4%, the highest yet in the state's own history to that point.
The most crowded ballot was in Niausa Kanubari, Arunachal Pradesh, where 10 candidates stood for the seat.
The backdrop
This election was fought on the same provisional footing the assembly had operated under since its creation.
Arunachal Pradesh was still governed under that same arrangement.
The Constitution (Thirty-seventh Amendment) Act, 1975 converted Arunachal Pradesh's Pradesh Council into a provisional Legislative Assembly of 33 members — 30 directly elected, 3 nominated by the Union government — effective 15 August 1975. The assembly's first direct general election followed in 1978.
