A new party's first win
What happened

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 130 of the 234 seats on offer, a landslide result.
Its nearest rival, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, fell to 48 seats — the very party it had just replaced in government.
What changed
The party that won this election hadn't existed at the state's previous assembly election.
It went from 0 seats to 130, a first-ever majority for a party that young.

Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.

At the other extreme, Killiyoor, Tamil Nadu was won by 60.0% of the vote.
Turnout peaked in Vedaranyam, Tamil Nadu, where 82.1% of registered voters cast a ballot.
The largest electorate was in Purasawalkam, Tamil Nadu, where 2,03,098 people were registered to vote.
The backdrop
This marked the start of Tamil Nadu's long-running rivalry between its two major Dravidian parties.
