All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won a third election in a row, extending its own run in office.
The ADK had now won 3 elections in a row.
This time it took 132 of the 234 seats on offer.
Its nearest rival, the Indian National Congress, won 61 seats.
What changed
This was also the highest-turnout assembly election the state had seen up to that point.
About 70.1% of registered voters turned out to cast a ballot, up +5.6 pp percentage points from the previous election.
It also grew slightly, from 129 to 132 seats.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
The closest race was Saidapet, Tamil Nadu, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 190 votes.
The most crowded contest was Maduranthakam, Tamil Nadu, where 90 candidates stood for a single seat.
Turnout peaked in Vedaranyam, Tamil Nadu, reaching 85.2%.
The largest electorate was in Villivakkam, Tamil Nadu, where 2,57,909 people were registered to vote.
