What happened
Congress stayed on top of Puducherry's assembly for another term, again falling short of a majority on its own.
The Indian National Congress won 10 of the 30 seats.
It governed instead through the UPA, which held 20 of the seats between its members.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam finished second with 7 seats.
What changed
Congress's run at the top of Puducherry's assembly continued for yet another election.
It extended its own hold on power to 6 elections in a row.
Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — also rose sharply from the previous election, up +13.3 pp.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
Neravy-Grand Aldee, Puducherry saw the tightest finish of the night, decided by just 184 votes — the smallest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, of any seat that year.
Thattanchavady, Puducherry had the widest margin of the election, at 83.5%.
Yanam, Puducherry recorded the highest turnout anywhere in the state, 96.7%.
Lawspet, Puducherry had the largest pool of registered voters of any seat, 51,708.
The backdrop
This was the last Puducherry election held on the assembly's old set of constituency boundaries.
Puducherry's 30 assembly constituencies were redrawn under the Delimitation Act, 2002 process based on the 2001 Census, with a Cabinet Committee decision of 4 January 2008 shifting district-wise seat allocation from 21-6-2-1 to 23-5-1-1 across Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Total seats and five Scheduled Caste reservations stayed unchanged. First used at the 2011 election.
