Puducherry's next assembly election produced no outright winner.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won the most seats, 15 of 30.

That fell short of the 16-seat majority mark — a hung house, where no party wins enough seats to govern alone.

The Indian National Congress, which had led the territory's first government, no longer commanded a majority — a collapse from the position it once held.

This election also brought a brand-new party to power, one that hadn't contested the previous election at all.

The DMK went from 0 seats to 15, a debut win at its very first contest.

It wasn't the only debut: DMK and CPI both picked up their first-ever seats in the assembly this election.

A few numbers from this election are worth knowing on their own.

The INC actually won a bigger vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — at 42.6%, against the winner's 33.7%.

Ariancoupom, Puducherry was decided by just 16 votes — the margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second.

Nettapacom, Puducherry posted the best turnout of the election, at 90.6% — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot.

At the other end, Grandi Aldee, Puducherry was the most one-sided contest, with the winner ahead by 52.0% of the vote.

The contest stayed fragmented beyond the leading parties, with independents and smaller parties also picking up seats of their own.
