A new regional party takes the lead
What happened
A regional party overtook the independents who had led before, becoming the largest force in the house.
The Manipur People"s Party won 20 of the 60 seats.
The Indian National Congress followed with 13.
Even so, the result was another hung house — no single party held enough seats to govern alone — well short of the 31-seat majority mark.
What changed
Candidates running without a party affiliation lost a lot of ground compared with the previous election.
Their combined vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — slid +2.9 pp from the previous election, a sharp collapse.
The single biggest shift sent 7 seats from the Independent to the Manipur Hills Union.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from this election are worth a look on their own.
The tightest race of the year, Lamsang, Manipur, was settled by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 1.
Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — peaked in Saikot, Manipur, at 94.2%.
The largest electorate of the night was Chandel, Manipur, with 16,047 people registered to vote.
The backdrop
A few smaller parties also won their first seats in this election.
Among them were MHU and KNA.
