Congress returned to power, turning out the party that had beaten it last time.

The Indian National Congress (I) won 118 of the 147 seats on offer.

That was well clear of the 74-seat mark needed to govern alone — another landslide result.

The Janata Party (Secular) - Ch. Charan Singh trailed a distant second with just 13 seats.

This was the first time the party had won here under this exact name.

It went from 26 seats to 118 seats between the two elections.

About 45.7% of registered voters turned out to cast a ballot, a share that rose from the election before.

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The closest race: Soro, Odisha was decided by just 108 votes — the margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second.

At the other extreme, Rayagada, Odisha produced the widest margin of the election, at 70.7% of the vote.

Khandapara, Odisha recorded the highest turnout of the year — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — at 72.4%.

The most crowded contest was in Bolangir, Odisha, where 10 candidates were on the ballot.

Beyond the top two finishers, the rest of the assembly's seats were split among a handful of smaller parties and independents.

In all, 6 parties won seats, alongside 7 independents.
