A new regional party won the most seats in Nagaland's bigger assembly, but stopped short of a governing majority.

The United Democratic Front won 25 of the 60 seats on offer.

That was short of the 31-seat majority mark, leaving a hung house — a result where no single party won enough seats to govern alone.

This election also came with a bigger assembly than the state had ever had before.

The number of seats grew from 40 to 60.

The winning UDF hadn't existed at the previous election at all — it went from 10 seats to 25.

It also unseated the previous winner, the Nagaland Nationalist Organisation.

A few numbers from the results stand out on their own.

Ghaspani-I, Nagaland saw the tightest finish of the election, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 7 votes. Ghaspani-I, Nagaland also drew the most candidates anywhere that year, 8.

Kohima Town, Nagaland had the widest margin of the election in percentage terms, at 46.0%. Kohima Town, Nagaland recorded the lowest turnout — turnout, the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — of any seat, at 44.0%.

By contrast, Noksen, Nagaland saw the highest turnout of the election, at 90.9%.

Dimapur-Ii, Nagaland had the largest electorate of any seat, with 13,434 registered voters.

This election took place in the state's early years as part of the Indian union.
