A third straight Congress win
What happened
Indian National Congress won again in Mysore, holding onto power for another term.
The INC won 138 of the 208 seats on offer.
That was down from the 150 seats it won last time, though still comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.
Its nearest independent rivals also lost ground, falling to 27 seats.
What changed
Mysore's political map stayed the same this time, and INC simply continued its winning run.
It has now won 3 elections in a row in the state.
The opposition thinned out too: independent candidates' vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — shifted by -11.4 pp from the previous election.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
The closest race: Hulsur, Mysore was decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 38.
At the other extreme, the winner in Raibag, Mysore won by 78.6% of the vote over the runner-up.
The largest electorate was in Sagar, Mysore, where 79,194 people were registered to vote.
The most crowded contest was in Bijapur, Mysore, where 9 candidates stood for a single seat.
The backdrop
This election is best read as a continuation rather than a change, extending a run of majorities for the same party in the state.
