Congress's Biggest Majority Yet
What happened
Congress returned to a commanding position in the state assembly, matching its old dominance from years earlier.
The Indian National Congress dominated the state assembly this time.
It won 250 of the assembly's 320 seats — a landslide.
Its nearest rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party, won just 58 seats.
What changed
This was the biggest winning margin in seats the state assembly had seen up to that point.
The 250 seats the party won were more than any winning party had taken in the state before.
The BJP's share of the vote barely moved, shifting by just +2.1 pp.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
The tightest finish was Damoh, Madhya Pradesh, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 92.
At the other extreme, the winner in Khairagarh, Madhya Pradesh took a margin of 67.2% of the vote.
Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — peaked in Waraseoni, Madhya Pradesh, at 77.9%.
Bhopal South, Madhya Pradesh also had more candidates on the ballot than any other seat that year: 24.
The backdrop
Independents remained a real presence even as the two main parties dominated.
Candidates outside any party still won 6 seats in their own right.
