Congress regains its majority
What happened
Indian National Congress in Madhya Pradesh won back full control of the assembly, recovering the majority it had fallen short of at the previous election.
The INC won 167 of the 296 seats on offer.
That was 18 seats more than it needed for a majority.
What changed
The comeback showed up most clearly in the seat count itself.
INC went from 142 seats to 167.
That gave it 4 wins in a row in the state.
About 49.6% of registered voters turned out to cast a ballot — the highest share of any Madhya Pradesh election up to that point.
Notable numbers
A few numbers from that election stand out.
Biaora, Madhya Pradesh was decided by just 20 votes — the smallest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, of any seat that year.
At the other extreme, Kolaras, Madhya Pradesh was won by the widest margin of any seat that year, measured as a share of the vote rather than in votes: 74.6%.
Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest turnout of any seat that year, at 73.9%.
The most crowded contest was in Dimni, Madhya Pradesh, where 19 candidates stood.
