This was Chhattisgarh's first assembly election since it became a separate state, and it was a close contest.

The Bharatiya Janata Party won 50 of the 90 seats on offer.

Its vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — was just 39.3%.

The Indian National Congress trailed closely, on a 36.7% vote share.

This election marked Chhattisgarh's debut as its own political entity, with its new Legislative Assembly choosing representatives for the very first time.

4 parties won seats in that first contest, with BJP and INC between them taking most of them.

The field was crowded: 819 candidates contested across the state's 90 constituencies.

A few numbers from that first election stand out.

The tightest race was in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 40 votes.

At the other extreme, Marwahi, Chhattisgarh was the most lopsided contest, with the winner ahead by 49.5% of the vote.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — was lowest in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh, at just 37.1%.

Raipur Rural, Chhattisgarh had the largest electorate of any seat that year, with 3,41,682 registered voters.

Chhattisgarh had only just become a state when this election took place.
