Telangana Rashtra Samithi lost power in Telangana, defeated at the ballot box by its closest rival.

Indian National Congress won 64 of the 119 seats on offer.

That was enough for a majority, but only just — 4 seats clear of the mark needed to govern alone.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi, the outgoing ruling party, fell to 39 seats.

The party that won this election had trailed well behind at the previous one.

It had won just 19 seats the previous time.

This time it gained 45 more.

Its vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — rose +11.0 pp from the election before.

A few numbers from the results stand out.

The tightest race was in Chevella (Sc), Telangana, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 268 votes.

Chandrayangutta, Telangana saw the widest margin of the year, with the winner finishing 53.1% of the vote ahead of the runner-up.

Turnout, the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot, peaked in Munugode, Telangana at 92.5%.

Serilingampally, Telangana was the state's most crowded seat, with 7,32,560 people on its electoral rolls.

The outgoing party had also renamed itself ahead of this election.
