Coorg's one and only election as a separate state gave one party clear control, with independent candidates taking the rest.

Indian National Congress won 15 of the 24 seats on offer.

That gave it a majority with 2 seats to spare, while independent candidates took the remaining 9.

Coorg's assembly was elected only this once, in an election fought partly over whether the state should remain separate at all.

Some of its constituencies also used a multi-member design, where a single contest sent more than one member to the house.

6 of the 18 constituencies worked this way.

Between them, they returned 24 members to the house.

A few numbers from Coorg's only election are worth knowing on their own.

The closest race was in Virajpet Town, Coorg, decided by just 48 votes — the smallest margin, how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second, of any seat in this election.

At the other end, Napoklu Nad, Coorg was won by 51.6% of the vote — the widest margin of any seat in this election, measured as a share of the vote rather than in votes.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — ranged from 80.5% in Bhagamandala Nad, Coorg down to 48.3% in Siddapur, Coorg.

Poonnampetnad, Coorg had the biggest electorate of any constituency, with 8,207 registered voters, and also drew the most crowded contest of the election, 6 candidates in all.

That same assembly later settled the question, and Coorg's separate existence as a state came to an end.
