The story

Ajmer's one and only election

What happened

One party won nearly every seat in Ajmer's only legislative assembly election.

The Indian National Congress won 20 of the 30 seats on offer — a supermajority of the house.

Its vote share — the slice of all ballots cast that went to one party or candidate — was just 44.5%.

Independent candidates took just 4 seats, despite polling 34.9% of the vote.

What changed

This was the only election Ajmer's legislative assembly ever held — the state's entire electoral history is this single contest.

Some of its constituencies used a multi-member design, where a single contest elected more than one member to the assembly.

6 of its 24 constituencies worked this way.

Notable numbers

A few numbers from that election stand out.

The closest race was Masuda, Ajmer, decided by a margin — how far ahead the winner finished, in votes, over whoever came second — of just 46 votes.

The most crowded contest was Ajmer- I (South West, Ajmer, where 13 candidates stood for a single seat.

Turnout — the share of registered voters who actually cast a ballot — peaked at 73.4% in Ajmer - Iv (Town Hall, Ajmer.

The biggest electorate was in Kekri, Ajmer, where 24,193 voters were registered to vote.

The backdrop

Ajmer's time as its own state was brief.
